Cyclone Yaas: Maritime ports in Bangladesh asked to hoist Signal No 3

Maximum sustained wind speed is about 89 kph, rising to 117 kph in gusts/squalls or squalls, says a Met Office bulletin

The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra were advised to hoist local cautionary signal No 3 on Tuesday evening instead of distant warning signal No 2 as the depression over the Southeast Bay and adjoining the Andaman Sea intensified into cyclonic storm Yaas.

The severe cyclone storm over the northwest bay and adjoining area moved north-westwards further and now lies over the same area.

In a special weather bulletin, the Met Office said at 3pm Tuesday, it was centred about 520 km Southwest of Chittagong port, 520 km Southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 425 km South-southwest of Mongla port, and 420 km South-southwest of Payra port.
It is likely to move north-westward further and may cross the Odisha-West Bengal coast by Wednesday noon.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 64 km of the severe cyclone centre is about 89 kph, rising to 117 kph in gusts/squalls or squalls, the bulletin said.
Sea will remain high near the severe cyclone centre.

All the fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution. They were also advised not to venture into the deep sea.

The coastal district of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jhalakati, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Bhola, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur and Chittagong and their offshore islands and chars are likely to experience wind speed up to 80-100 kph in gusts or squalls with heavy to very heavy falls during the passage of the storm.
These areas are also likely to be inundated by 2-4 feet height above normal astronomical tide under the influence of the full moon phase.

Cyclone Sidr, which was blocked in the Sundarbans, passed through Dhaka to Assam. He said heavy rains and strong winds would blow in different parts of the country, especially in the coastal areas, while crossing the coast on Wednesday.

He said the weather would remain like this on Wednesday and Thursday, with intermittent rain and gusts of wind. The weather will improve from Friday.
