PM Hasina urges all to plant trees to protect environment

National tree plantation campaign kicks off

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday urged the people to plant more trees to protect Bangladesh from the adverse impacts of climate change.

The prime minister made the call while inaugurating the National Tree Plantation Campaign 2021 to mark World Environment Day on Saturday.

“We must protect the environment. This country is ours. If we want to protect the country from the adverse impacts of climate changes, we must promote greenery in this green Bengal,” she said.
She launched the campaign by planting saplings at her official residence Ganabhaban.

Noting that she planted saplings with her own hands, Sheikh Hasina called upon the people to plant trees wherever they can.

“Plant at least one sapling, but it would be best if you could plant three saplings. I want you to plant three saplings: one for fruit, one for timber and one for herbs,” she said.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin and Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar were present on the occasion.

This year, the National Tree Plantation Campaign is being carried out under the theme “Mujibborshe Angikar Kori, Sonar Bangla Sabuj Kori,” to motivate the people to make Bangladesh even greener in the Mujib Year.

The day is being observed across the world under the theme of “Ecosystem Restoration” on Saturday.
The prime minister said Bangladesh has achieved remarkable success in afforestation, increasing the country’s forestation to 22% thanks to various measures taken by the government.

She mentioned that the trees not only protect the environment, but also provide financial solvency and other benefits to the people.

Sheikh Hasina also called upon the people to take proper care of trees.

“It is not enough to plant saplings only. You have to take care of them as well,” the prime minister said.
