The country rises seven notches up in 2021 Global Peace Index, ranks 91st
Bangladesh has gone up 7 notches from 2020 and secured 91st place among 163 nations in the 2021 Global Peace Index.
The improvement makes Bangladesh the third most peaceful country in South Asia — behind Bhutan and Nepal and ahead of Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Prepared by the Sydney-based think tank Institute for Economics and Peace, the Global Peace Index measures the state of peace across three domains — the level of societal safety and security, the degree of militarization and the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict.
Bangladesh and India have the lowest fear of violence rates in South Asia, with 25% and 23% of respondents, respectively, being very worried about violent crime, according to the 15th edition of the index released on Thursday.
On the other hand, Afghanistan has the highest fear of violence in the region, with 53% per cent of people being very worried.
Afghanistan has remained the least peaceful country in the world for the fourth consecutive year. 79% of respondents from the country said they felt less safe in 2019 than they did in 2014.
The report noted that the largest improvement in peacefulness in South Asia occurred in Pakistan, which experienced a 1.9% improvement in overall score on the index.
Meanwhile, Singapore has been named the most peaceful Asian country, while Iceland remains the most peaceful nation in the world, a position it has held since 2008.
