Single-day number of cases continue to rise
Bangladesh recorded 6,058 new Covid-19 cases and 81 deaths from the deadly disease in the 24 hours between 8am Wednesday and 8am Thursday.
This is the highest number of positive cases in a day recorded in over two months, as 7,201 cases were reported on April 12.
Between Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 3,230 Covid patients also recovered across the country, according to the daily media statement from the health directorate in the afternoon
Thursday’s data showed that the country’s total caseload climbed to 872,935, the death toll to 13,868, and the total number of recovered patients to 794,783.
The latest figures also showed an infection rate of 19.93% based on positive results from tests of 30,391 samples in 554 authorized labs across the country between Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
To date, 6,435,466 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.56%.
The latest development showed that there has been a spike in the number of daily cases over the past week as the number of tests went up.
The country recorded 5,727 cases on Wednesday, 4,846 on Tuesday, 4,636 on Monday, 3,641 on Sunday, and 3,057 cases on Saturday.
The country also recorded 85 deaths in the 24 hours between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings – a steep rise from Tuesday’s 75 fatalities. It was the highest single-day figure since April 29 when 88 people died from Covid.
Of the 81 fatalities recorded on Thursday – 55 men and 26 women – 23 were from the Khulna division, 20 from Rajshahi, 13 from Dhaka, seven each from Chittagong and Rangpur, five in Sylhet, and three each from Mymensingh, and Barisal divisions.
Seventy-six of them died while undergoing treatment at the different hospitals of the country while five died at home.
Thirty-six of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 18 between 51 and 60, nine between 41 and 50, nine between 31 and 40, eight between 21-30, and one was aged between 11-20
So far, 9,920 men (71.54%) and 3,948 women (28.46%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
Since the beginning, 7,447 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,627 in Chittagong, 936 in Rajshahi, 1,087 in Khulna, 413 in Barisal, 511 in Sylhet, 555 in Rangpur, and 292 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.59%.
Currently, 36,220 people are in isolation and 57,836 are quarantined.
On March 8 last year, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan city in late December, 2019, and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 3,909,000 lives and infected as many as 180,450,000 people across the world till Thursday afternoon, according to worldometer.
As many as 165,161,000 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 220 countries and territories across the planet.
