Shopping malls, markets, resorts, community centres to remain closed
The alarming rise in Covid-19 infections and deaths has the prompted government to further strengthen the restrictions on public movement and gathering across Bangladesh, including re-enforcing the suspension of all kinds of public transports from Monday.
In a notification issued on Sunday, when the country witnessed the highest deaths from Covid-19 since last year, the Cabinet Division said all kinds of transports, except for rickshaws and vehicles carrying emergency goods, would be suspended from 6am on Monday to 6am on Thursday.
Shopping malls, markets, resorts and community centres will also be closed during this period, the notice said.
Restaurants and eateries can operate from 8am to 8pm only for takeaway services, it further added.
Government and private offices have been told to operate with a skeleton staff while ensuring transportation for them and making masks mandatory for all.
In breach of the health guidelines, the authorities would take legal steps, if needed, according to the notice.
Previously, the government decided to go into complete shutdown from Monday but later deferred it till Thursday.
In the 24 hours till 8am Sunday, as many as 119 people died of Covid-19, the highest daily figure since the pandemic began. With 5,268 people testing positive over the same period, the daily infection rate climbed to 21.59%.
The upward surge of the coronavirus has led to the country recording 136,747 cases in the last one month alone (since April 27).
