However, all emergency travel requests will be considered, says the embassy in Dhaka

India has suspended its visa operations in Bangladesh as the country entered into a week-long strict lockdown implemented from Thursday amid a dramatic surge in Covid-19 deaths and infections.

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka made the announcement on Thursday in a Facebook post.

Visa application centres in Bangladesh will remain closed from Thursday till further notice, it said before adding all emergency travel requests will be considered during the lockdown.
All enquiries for emergency travel, especially medical travel, may be directed to: [email protected], 09612333666, 09614333666, says the Facebook post.\

Earlier, the visa centres remained closed for two weeks between April 15 and 28 this year when the government imposed another strict lockdown to curb the Covid-19 transmission.
Before that, the visa operations had resumed functioning in October of last year after remaining suspended for more than six months due to the pandemic, which unfolded in March 2020.

The Indian visa application centres in Bangladesh were issuing visas under all categories except tourist visas.

Meanwhile, the closure of the border with India has been extended till July 14 amid the worsening Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh, which was closed on April 26 amid concerns over the Delta variant— first identified in the neighbouring country.
