He had been granted four-weeks anticipatory bail in September
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) on Saturday arrested Ehteshamul Haque Bhola, who allegedly supplied arms used in the killing of former Chittagong superintendent of police Babul Akhtar’s wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, from Jessore.
The accused was arrested from Benapole under Jessore district on Friday morning, confirmed Chittagong PBI Superintendent of Police (SP) Naima Sultana on Saturday.
“Bhola was brought to Chittagong after being arrested at Benapole. Details will be announced later,” she said.
On September 15, the High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol granted four weeks of anticipatory bail to Bhola. He was ordered to surrender to the Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court before his bail expired.
On October 14, Bhola did not surrender before the court, however, he applied for more time. The court rejected Bhola’s bail extension application and issued an arrest warrant for not following the orders of the High Court.
On the morning of June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead near the GEC Intersection in Chittagong, when she was on her way to drop her son off at school.
Immediately after the grisly murder, investigators said militants may have settled a score against Babul as he conducted several successful anti-anti-terrorism drives. However, they said later that professional killers were behind the murder and that one Kamrul Islam Musa, alias Musa Sikdar, had hired them and plotted the murder.
Babul was in Dhaka at the time of the killing to join Police Headquarters after being promoted. Just before that, he was stationed in Chittagong.
He lodged a case over the murder with Panchlaish police station in the port city, accusing unidentified persons.
However, Babul’s father-in-law former police officer Mosharraf Hossain and mother-in-law Shaheda Musharraf blamed Babul for the murder.
On May 12 this year, former superintendent of police (SP) Babul Akter’s father-in-law Mosharraf Hossain filed a case hours after the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) said evidence linked Babul to the murder of his wife Mahmuda Akter Mitu.
When Babul was taken to court the same day after being shown as arrested in the case, the judge granted a five-day remand for his interrogation.
Babul has been in jail since his remand ended.
