Pakistan tried to establish that it was a war between India and Pakistan, says the minister
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Monday said that someday there would be no visa required to travel to India from Bangladesh.
He said that the two countries were now at the golden chapter of bilateral partnership and cooperation due to the increased trust.
“This is a model relationship,” he told a program organized by the Sector Commanders’ Forum at the National Press Club marking 50 years of diplomatic relationship between Bangladesh and India.
Momen said that relationship among citizens of the two countries was also very deep and the government wanted to further strengthen it.
The two countries would continue solving all issues bilaterally through dialogues and discussions, he hoped.
The connectivity between the two countries was improving, the minister said, adding that relationship with other South Asian countries would be improved rapidly as well.
“Pakistan tried to establish that Bangladesh’s Liberation War was a war between India and Pakistan. But it was a war of Bangladesh’s independence where India just helped us. It was clear through [India’s] recognition of Bangladesh [on December 6, 1971].”
Momen thanked India and Bhutan for recognizing Bangladesh as a sovereign country. The decision made by Indira Gandhi, the then Indian prime minister, was well thought, he said.
The minister said that, after India’s recognition, Russia had vetoed a US resolution at the UN Security Council for cease-fire the next day.
Sector Commanders’ Forum Executive President Mohammad Nurul Alam, Liberation War Museum Trustee Dr Sarwar Ali, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami, Bhutan’s Ambassador Rinchen Kuentsyl among others also spoke to the occasion.
