At least four shipyard workers have sustained injuries in a gas explosion at a shipbreaking yard in Chittagong.
The incident was reported from Jamuna Shipbreakers Yard in Sitakunda upazila around 8:30am on Saturday, confirmed Sub-inspector Faruq Hossain of Sitakunda police station.
The injured persons are Sohel Rana, 25, Zahid Hasan, 26, Mizanur Rahman Milon, 40, and Firoz Pramanik, 24.
All four of them, who had been working on taking apart a scrap ship, were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
“They jumped when they saw a flash of fire while cutting the ship,” yard Manager Mejba Uddin told media.
He said the blast was triggered by sparks coming in contact with the gas accumulated inside the ship.
Sohail and Zahid sustained burn injuries, while Mizanur and Firoz hurt their legs and waists, he added.
CMCH police outpost Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Alauddin Talukder said Sohail and Zahid were admitted to the burn unit of the hospital with 20% burns.
Meanwhile, Mizanur and Firoz are undergoing treatment at the orthopaedic unit.
