Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested death row convict Jashim Uddin who had been on the run for more than two decades.
Jashim, now 50 years old, was arrested from Nimtola area of Chittagong on Thursday night.
He, was given the death penalty along with 11 others in 2007 over the murder of Jaane Alam in March 2002. The High Court later upheld the death sentence of 10 persons.
RAB said that Jashim was on the run since the conviction. He used a fake NID card to obtain a driver’s license and took up the occupation of a truck driver.
RAB said that the man had cut off contacts with his family and also got married while being on the run.
Earlier on January 27, another death row convict Syed Ahmed was nabbed by RAB. Ahmed was on the run for over two decades after being convicted for the same murder.
Jaane Alam was one of the witnesses in the case filed over his younger brother’s murder… The suspects thought that the case would stall if they killed Alam, and then they would be able to take over his properties as well,” said a senior RAB officer following the arrest of Ahmed.
